Victorian Furniture

Victorian Furniture refers to the unique style of furniture from the Victorian era. This style of furniture was marked by a number of influences from the history such as Tudor, Elizabethan, English Rococo, Gothic, Neoclassical etc, with no dominant style whatsoever. However, the emphasis was always on excess of ornamentation.

Victorian furniture is known for its timeless beauty and feel of romanticism. Victorian era concerns the Queen Victoria’s reign which lasted from 1837 to 1901.  Since this entire era is marked by a feel of mysticism and romanticism in everything including arts, crafts, religion and social values, we can witness the same feel in the furniture of that era.

Victorian furniture is intricately carved, grand and ornamented in rich colors to give a feel of grandeur and opulence. However, the furniture designers of that time came up with unique designs and techniques through which they tried to save space. Since Victorian furniture was already space consuming by nature, this technique helped a lot in putting things together in a room.

Victorian era furniture designers created multipurpose space saving furniture solutions that suited the needs of most of the people. The Murphy bed or the wall bed is one such example. Multipurpose furniture was also one of the creative ideas of that time. There were dressing tables designed in a way that they could turn into a washstand, complete with mirrors and towel rack

These kinds of designs even today would entice the buyers. This is because space is even more of an issue with modern homes. People would love to have a bed that could vanish into the wall, to create room for other activities inside the room.

Victorian furniture has a class of its own. They are in high demand around the world, because of their intricately carved designs and vibrant colors. They add a class and sophistication to every home and show the taste of the collector. That is why people pay thousands of dollars to acquire furniture pieces from that era.

The original works of furniture from the Victorian era are quiet expensive. This is because they are collector’s items and are preserved since generations. Most collectors take a lot of effort in maintenance of these furniture items and fewer still agree to sell them off. However, there are certain collectors that sell such furniture which are basically works of art. But the prices, are usually beyond imagination for most of the average people.

People who are interested in such vintage furniture are usually restrained by their limited purchase power. However, there is a solution to this issue as well. Today, there are numerous manufacturers around the world that manufacture replicas for Victorian furniture, some of which are as good as the original pieces. This modern Victorian furniture makes use of the same styling and carving technique. Some manufacturers stick to the original style, whereas some manufacturers add their own innovations to bring a mixed style which is primarily based on the Victorian era but modifications are made keeping in mind the modern needs.
